To what extent are adults responsible for themselves?
I was thinking about this as I walked by a lake in my local park, and I saw the sign that says 'Strictly no swimming'. Now I think adults should be informed of the dangers and allowed to decide for themselves what risks they take, in this and other areas of life. I mean an adult shouldn't be allowed to sue the park authority over an accident while swimming because they are an adult and responsible for themselves, right?

Government is a necessary good..sounds like you are in the opposite camp...IF human beings were wise, fair, and enlightened -we could trust individual decision making...but they are lazy, jealous and bigoted-thus the need for rules and regulations

just because someone is an adult does not mean they are mature, considerate, wise, sensible or indeed responsible.
Right, but if this "adult" had no job or insurance, and decided to take a dip, then got stuck on a rusty pole in the middle of said lake, we the taxpayer are stuck paying for a rescue team and the ensuing medical treatment for above referenced dimwit.
I agree that people need to be responsible for their actions and take the hit when their own behavior takes its toll, but humanity doesn't allow us to just let a fool die while we stand shaking our heads.
The reason the sign is up is because you do have the right to sue the park, all be it wrong.
Some think people are not able to take care of themselves and impose all kinds of restrictions. Where is this going:
No more fast food in poor neighborhoods, No more steak restaurants in rich neighborhoods, No more expensive clothes for rich kids because they don't learn the value of money, no more welfare checks for poor kids because of the same reason.
If people spent more time minding their own business, then they'd spend less time minding mine.
i agree my orange im of the same beleif too, sick and tiored of no-one taking their responsibilities , but since everything is now someone fault and lawyers more than happy to help out greedy idiots society is going to the bin
I totally agree. I feel we are living in a bit of a nanny state. I work as a nurse, and it amazes me how many people want miracle cures for their problems and take no responsibility for their own health. People know that being overweight, smoking, excessive alcohol, lack of exercise etc, will contribute to poor health. If they want to take these risks, then personnaly I feel they must take responsibility for their poor health. It is their decision. Change is difficult, but I frequently come across people who say "why cant the GP give me tablets to bring my blood pressure down". When I suggest joining the smoking cessation clinic or embarking on a weight loss/exercise programme with encouragement from other people, they look at me as if I have 2 heads!
Sometimes thieves sue for getting hurt on someone's property.
I don't think it's right. If there is a rule, its not really a law now right? A man can break rules and possibly get thrown out of the park. Theres nothing really illegal about it.
The man or family should pay for his injuries. Final.
Even if there was ferocious alligators in there there is always a sign, and this man can decide for himself if he wants to get hurt.
Everywhere you walk there is an Rshole following you; in more ways than one.
Society has to cater for Idiots.
