You have to at least look clean and tidy to show some respect for the court. That does not mean you have to wear a suit and tie, but to look clean. It would not be considered appropriate to be wearing ripped jeans for instance, although they may be fashionable. Yes your lawyer can ask to hear a copy of the statement tape if he/she so requests it.
I know you're in the UK, so this may not help, but in the USA we've got a dress code for court. When we are called for Jury Duty, we get specific instructions about not wearing jeans or shorts, etc. And our lawyers aren't so formal as to wear robes and wigs, so I suspect the UK may be equally strict.
In any case--it never hurts to dress for success!
