How illegal is this?
I can't afford to mail out business postcards, so I want to put some in people's mailbox. Only about a 100 or so. How illegal is this? Is it a big deal? Does the postoffice really care? We live in Illinois
Answers:
DON'T! stick them in the door instead. it is actually a violation of federal law for you to stick those cards in there. take the extra few seconds to put them on the door. more personal that way anyway.
I don't think this is illegal as long as the businesses don't care. The only other question is why don't you personally give them to the business?
Yes it is very Illegal, it is considered tampering with the mail and is a federal offense
You are technically stealing. It is as corrupt as putting our soldiers into Iraq and telling them they need to find weapons of mass destruction so our President doesn't look like and *** on national television.
It is illegal to place something in a mailbox that is not mail and have appropriate postage attached.
BTW, the postage for 100 post cards is only $26.00...
No i don't think so, it would be like you handing out fliers for a car wash!
It is a Federal Offense if you put the cards IN the mailbox but not if you put them outside the mailboxes, say where the flag is, this is how the churches get away with it where I live. You could also put them at their front door.
It's very illegal--it's a federal crime. Here's the code language:
"Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like matter, on which no postage has been paid, in any letter box established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the receipt or delivery of mail matter on any mail route with intent to avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such offense be fined under this title."
18 U.S.C. sec. 1725.
I don't know if your local postmaster will care, but the postal inspectors might. I wouldn't fool around with the mailbox or its contents. Stick your postcards under people's windshield wipers.
