Should i appeal a $158 fine on "Failing to produce evidence of concession"?

i received a fine 2 days ago and still thinking if i should appeal or not. i had work experience in the city for 2 weeks, on the second day I was caught catching the train on a concession fare with no concession card. and i thought i only needed a concession card if i am 16 or over.Is there anyway to reduce the fine or get away with it because $158 is a lot of money and i don't have a job yet.

P.S i got my concession card the day after i was caught

Answer:
You can certainly try to appeal the decision but it would likely cost more to fight the fine than it would be to pay it. Very likely you wouldn't win in an appeal because ignorance is not an acceptable defense to a legal violation. About the only way you would be able to fight the fine is to prove that information on the need for a concession card was not readily available. But if it's posted or available as a flyer you won't have a winable argument.

Best bet is to pay the fine and feel better in the knowledge that you now have a card and won't get additional fines.

ignorance is no defence under the eyes of the law.

i doubt you'd get away with trying to appeal it, but if doesn't cost you anything to appeal, what do you have to lose?
