Why are cigarettes legal?

They are addictive and kill. The tobacco industry is forced to pay huge amounts of money on the yearly basis for advertisements against smoking and law suits. But why all these lawsuits if cigarettes are a legal product? I know that it doesn't alter one's behavior, but shouldn't you be protected against such an addictive and dangerous product that you have so easily access to?

Answers:
The tax money is to great for the governments to give up. Yes, the smoking rate is going down, but the amount of taxes on a pack keep going up to prevent a loss. The government cannot be responsible for everything we do in life.We have to make our own choices and take responsibility for what we do.

Because the gov't is addicted to the taxes that cigarettes generates.
Why is alcohol legal? people drink and kill people on the roads everyday, People get liver disease and have no health insurance and the tax payers pay their bills. I am not saying we should enforce prohibition again but in the same note cigarettes should not be illegal either.
It's called freedom.
Just like eating gobs of pesticide on fruit and vegetables.

Pesticides kill...So should we make fruit & vegetables Illegal??

Maybe we should get a part-time job, or help out around the house, and not worry about cigarettes.
I don't want to have that kind of government
I don't care as long as nobody is allowed to smoke next to me any more in a public place. As for my family, I'll work hard to make sure nobody smokes, and I'll try and influence anybody else who would listen. I am more worried about the guns, because I have no control of that in any way, shape and form, and cannot protect myself unless i have a gun too, and then it's a wild wild west.
the government won't make it illegal because if we ever did all quit smoking, social security would be wiped out within 10 years, because of all the extra "living".
Because the cigarette companies also spend tons of money bribing the government to keep them legal, as long as they give the population warning. Also, when most people smoke, they do not go crazy and hurt other people. Thirdly, we are in America, a free country, so why shouldn't we be able to smoke?

P.S. I'm not a smoker.
based on you assessments, cars, trucks, air craft, hammers, knifes most legal drugs, water, soft drinks and humans should be made illegal. They all kill and can be dangerous.
Here's a hint:

"Boehner hands out 'tobacco checks' on floor of House
In late June of 1995 then-GOP Conference Chairman (current minority leader & a smoker)John Boehner handed out "about a half-dozen" checks from the political action committee of tobacco company Brown & Williamson Corp. to fellow Republicans on the floor of the House.

Boehner's chief of staff Barry Jackson stated, "We were trying to help guys who needed to get their June 30th numbers up, their cash-on-hand numbers up. All leadership does this. We have to raise money for people and help them raise money."

The answer is easy. Big(cancer) Tobacco is paying off politicians.
Your wonderful American Government and their system of taxation. Also, the Tobacco Lobby is a mighty powerful one. There is only 1 reason why cigarettes are legal and that is MONEY! The tobacco Co's still make a profit after all their legal defenses and anti-smoking advertising. What I find ironic is we have proven that cigarettes and alcohol are deadly, yet we keep them legal and keep other less dangerous off the list of legal drugs because the Gov does not know how to create a profit from them. Except Olly North and the Iran-contra affair, then, of course, the Feds can sell us Cocaine!
The government wants the huge amount of money and the tobacco states can swing an election.
