Why did america suspend the death penalty and for how long?

Answers:
Furman v. Georgia, (1972) was the case that "suspended" death penalties in the US while the Supremes decided whether it was cruel and unusual. In 1976, the door was opened for states to institute death penalties if they satisfied the SC guidelines for what was or was not cruel and unusual. During the time after Furman, all death penalty cases were commuted to life in prison (or whatever the longest time for murder was in each particular state.) Bascially, the death penalty was left up to the states.

Interestingly, it was the Furman case that saved Charley Manson's life. His death sentence was one that was commuted after Furman.

The first person executed after the reinstitution of the death penalty was Gary Gilmore. He was executed by firing squad in Utah. When he was asked if he had any last words, he said:

"Let's do it."

They did.

Death penalty is left up to the states with the exception of federal cases. Texas and Florida as well as many other states are still executing death row inmates.
coz it naughty to people!
what are you talking about? the can execute you now without giving you a trial or even showing you the evidence against you. they can execute you in secrecy. ever heard of the patriot act.
America never suspended the death penalty-did it? States have the right to decide if they have a death penalty or not- each of them seperately.
is this current news, like it just came. i never heard of this. the patriot act was mentioned by someone. i always knew they were power hungry. you see, people have the right to overthrow their government. but to make sure no one ever does, they made it so it was illegal to be against the government in anyway. just for hanging out with a terrorist and not having anything to do with it. they can arrest you. one case, a soldier was ordered to shoot a mother and her child because they were suspected car bombers. he refused, that was considered as siding with the enemy. so they want to put him in jail. a teacher compared george bush to hitler, he got arrested. why? what makes any difference if you compare the guy next door or a monkey? because they need to be in power.
The death penalty was suspended in most states in 1974 because the Supreme Court ruled they were unconstitional.

Most states had to rewrite their death penalty laws to comply with the Supreme Court ruling.
Okay, some of the claims on this page are ridiculous. You clearly have a very false notion of the Patriot Act. I am not a fan of it by any way, but it is not illegal to be against the government. You can't be arrested for saying you hate George Bush. The teacher you mentioned was put on leave from the school. That is far from being arrested. Additionally, it was the decision of the school, not the government. Secondly, the story of someone being ordered to kill a mother and child is most likely completely fictional. Show me the source of this information. The US has some crazy practices, but let's not get ridiculous here.
