Hate-crime arrests in Quran desecrations at Pace University?

NEW YORK (AP) _ A 23-year-old man was arrested Friday on hate-crime charges after he threw a Quran in a toilet at Pace University on two separate occasions, police said.

Stanislav Shmulevich of Brooklyn was arrested on charges of criminal mischief and aggravated harassment, both hate crimes, police said. It was unclear if he was a student at the school. A message left at the Shmulevich home was not immediately returned.

Question - What are your thoughts ?

Answers:
My thoughts are this,

First we do not know if he bought the Quran's or he stole them.

If he bought them, then threw them in the toilet, they have no case in prosecuting him for destroying his own property.

If he stole them, then threw them in the toilet, then he can be prosecuted.

The question is, who owned the Qurans.

If he owned them, then it would come under freedom of expression just like flag burning.

If he stole them then it is another story.

The same would have been done if it were a Bible or Torah. I think it was appropriate action.
I have a problem with the special category of "hate crimes" in general; usually other laws are generally already available to prosecute someone who makes a gesture like this. In this case, the man broke the law, he should pay. Divisive, grand-standing gestures such as this aren't needed right now.
We must send this guy an award for humanitarian good deeds.
WHere can I send money to this guy to help pay his legal fees?

What he did was a public service. That hate-filled book is on the same level as Mein Kampf.
I read the koran. That whole book is a hate crime and anyone who throws it in the toilet is messing up because wet korans don't burn so good. Keep the korans dry. I'll bring the matches.
Wake up and smell the jihad.
