Do you think the Internet should have Police?
Scams, frauds, robbers.
Do you not think it is time for the Internet to have a Police force?
If you compare the internet with any country, it would be a crime not to have one.
How long is this this new worldwide internet community going to continue without laws?
Answers:
The Internet does have laws.
* Laws irrespective of cyber space such as intellectual property libel defamation
* Laws against various bad stuff like spam viruses etc.
* Laws against people using computers without permission
Problem is many of the laws have been written by people who are non-technical, don't understand all the ramifications.
For example, imagine a person walking down a row of doorways, rattling every door knob they come to ... they are looking for a door where they can break in without difficulty. There are ways for people to do that with computers, looking for a computer they can break into.
So a law gets passed, making it illegal to do that.
Problem is, we can have a security guard checking a particular building or computer to make sure everything is sealed tight, except if it is now illegal to do that even with your own building or computer, the only people doing it are the crooks.
The Internet does have police
* keystone e-cops (e.g. anti-badware software)
* various non-governmental voluntary groups
* various private organizations which have lobbied Congress to give them police powers (e.g. anti-piracy people)
What we need is a dramatic rise in the professional quality of the Internet police.
no, bad idea...
As long as possible and then some, I hope.
Oh yeah, great idea. Another way that we can be monitered and restricted! And the "police" would probably be the United States; repressing anything that the president didn't agree with. Can you imagine?
I believe the internet should be a free zone, where people can express whatever they wish, with anonymity and without fear of suppression.
The internet has all the same laws that any civilized country has. Scams, fraud, robbery are illegal in every country, so they are illegal on the net. The fact that some people are stupid enough to fall for them is their own fault.
Unfortunately, it will never happen because the Internet is Global. So how do we agree on laws? You would need a world-wide government first. That is what makes the Internet so unique, it is total freedom, mostly. And if you start policing it, people will throw one huge fit. Right now, individual governments do their own policing of the net to a point. Some countries are very lenient and others are very strict.
However, even before the Internet, their were still scams and fraud going on, all the net did was give people a way to do it from another country as to not get in trouble.
So, to answer your question, no, it should not be policed, I want to be able to do what I want with my server, one reason it is in Canada, since they are a lot more lenient. So, I would rather keep almost my complete freedom to say and do what I want on the Net.
I do however think more education should go into scams, so people don't get hit with them, yet their will always be someone that will take the bait on $50-million dollars to help someone out. Yet education is the best, just like with viruses, most people know that if it looks suspicious, don't open it :)
Now, forming non-profit groups to aid in the crack-down on scams and etc would be nice, but no one group should police it. Maybe you should start a group?
The internet is the last place on earth where people can talk about whatever they want. Look at whatever they want. What would they do, anyway? Suspend service to violators? And what would that do? They'd make a new name on a new account and do it again. Are you serious? Not only is it a bad idea, I don't believe it's possible. Not to mention, if it is possible, any government body assigned to coordinate this "police force" would then control everything. Everything can be found on the internet with the right codes and passwords and this group would have to be given all of that information to do their job properly. And I could go on and on and on....but who cares.
I don't think it should have police because that would be costly/difficult/inefficient. Plus the FBI already cracks down on piracy and child porn rings.
The internet should have some revamping though. The whole email system should be revamped so emails can't be spoofed and so spam can be easily traced to it's source. Forcing pornographic websites to use certain domains would be another way to control the internet.
