Shall I warn you? Well you have been warned then?

A man who was spotted in the street using his laptop to access an unsecured wireless connection has been arrested.

The 39-year-old man was seen sitting on a wall outside a home in Chiswick, west London, by two community support officers.

When questioned he admitted using the owner's unsecured wireless internet connection without permission and was arrested on suspicion of stealing a wireless broadband connection.

So does this apply to you? And did you know it is illegal to piggy back on someone elses wireless connection and it is cheating as well.

Answers:
Because the person has to pay for the service, the person piggy backing on it is obtaining a service by deception. That's theft, and a good spot by the PCSO's.

No I'm on computer at work
because you said sorry. It is the owners fault for not securing their wirless connection. everyone in my neighborhood has wireless, so why pay for it myself when i can use my laptop in my home for free?
Thanks, but I am using my own connection.
does that mean no signing in on others msn? aww shucks..
I think its stupid only the Uk pays to connect to the internet and its making a crime out of something which isn't really a big deal congradulations they got a piggy backer never mind the rapsits, drug sellers and kidnappers.
Well, yes. It generally costs money to have a wireless connection (or the equipment to set it up), so using someone else's without permission is stealing. My neighbors have a network that reaches all the way to our own. Also having a network, we've told them several times to increase their security. No luck so far.
I saw this storey and I don't believe it for a moment.

Either this is a setup to boost the terrible reputation of these PCSO's or this has got to be the stupidest man on the Planet.

Its so simple to get out of it. How could you ever get caught for this? Why tell them anything? And PCSO's? You gotta be kidding me.
Ok..well said...many are not aware
IN law it cannot be theft.
To commit theft you have to take something with the intent to permanently deprive the owner.
when he had finished and even while using it the owner had still got his connection how can that be theft.
therefore he as been arrested for a non existent crime and any action taken now will be unlawful.
Further to this he can claim he was unlawfully detained and is entitled to damages.

it may be illegal but legally it cannot be theft

aidya IMHO if I take half your tank of petrol you have lost half a tank of petrol I have stolen you cannot use that is theft
band width cannot be physically taken that is the difference
and you are missing my point I am not saying connecting to someones connection is not illegal I am saying it is not theft and that is what the man got arrested for allegedly
IMHO (against what others have said) it is theft

although it was not totally removed from the owner, it is stealing of bandwidth. owner is paying for x speed internet, but only getting half of it.

if you go and fill your car up with petrol and i come and syphon half of it out, you are still getting use of the petrol aren't you, but it is still theft.
