This is for medical people - Where the H**L does hospital rules come from?

My father had a MAJOR stroke last night - EMS took him to a city hospital (with a bad rep) after they transferred him from emergency to a bed - they told my sister that she could not sit with him all night because she was FEMALE and he was in the room with another man (BOTH MEN ARE VERY OLD) She became so upset that at 4am I had to get out of BED and go to the hospital demanding that she stay - (she also is his guardian) I literally told them to remove him from the hospital - because the hospital in the SUBURBS does not have these rules!! I am beginning to think this may be a little CRAZY - maybe not RACIAL but definitley economic status - one hospital is a poor city one the other a rather well to do one. The EMS told us they could not drive him to the better hospital because they are not allowed to go outside "city lines" I am so ANGRY!

They can and do make rules about opposite sexes staying in rooms. It is to protect the patients that they are responsible for. If you were in another room with another female patient who had a sicko for a husband that raped you, the hospital would be responsible. The rules are correct and have to apply both ways. I know you feel inconvenienced, but they hospital is right. They have to protect the patients. They can't make rules and not apply them to everyone even in a situation like yours. They have to be applied equally across the board.

All medical facilities have their own rules which have come to be to meet state and federal regulations and past problems. I've never heard of a family member not being able to sit with a patient because of being the opposite sex of a room mate. As for the EMS, they have a duty to take a patient to the nearest ER, irregardless of perference. If you want your father moved, then i suggest a private ambulace service.
Sorry to hear that your father is not well. Obviously, you are quite stressed. But where do the rules come from? They come from the lawyers that work for the companies that insure the hospital.
