How do I word a Promissory note?

A friend won't give me the Bill of Sale to the car I'm buying from her until I present her with one.

Answer:
If you aren't paying cash for the car then some kind of promissory note [IOU] is required.

You can buy one from 'Legalzoom.com [see below].

Or you can write one yourself. List the things that you promise to do [e.g., how much you are paying, how often you will pay, interest rate [if any], etc. Also, you should list the things your friend will do.
