Who can obtain your I.P Address? And is it legal to do so?

Like can someone obtain an I.P Address so that he can find out who he is talking to and is it illegal to do so? I am not sure who is right or wrong.

Answers:
Whenever you connect to another computer on the Internet, your IP address becomes visible to that computer. Otherwise, the connection just can't work. It is perfectly legal for the owner of that other computer to view your IP if you allowed the connection to take place (i.e. by visiting a website, engaging in a chat session, sending him an email, etc.). If another person has your IP address, he can find out certain things about you such as who your Internet provider is, what your city you're located in or near, and if your computer is currently on or not. Nobody can use it to figure out your real home address though, without a warrant issued by the police to your Internet provider. But if a skilled hacker gets a hold of your IP, he could scan your computer's ports for any security vulnerabilities and possibly break in to take control of your it and steal your personal info, hence the reason why you should always keep your Microsoft Windows updates current and have a good firewall.

An IP address is used so your computer can communicate over a network or over the Internet. You cant do anything with it or "findout who someone is talking to"
Anyone can obtain your IP address if you send them an email.

Just open an email and look at "Full Headers" -- Under View in Thunderbird -- might be under options in other mail readers.
Well, as soon as you log on to freelawanswer.com , they know your IP address. The same applies to 'all' websites. It is very easy and legal
Here is my ip address: 72.145.97.136

By knowing my ip address, you pose no immediate threat to me. And furthermore, you wouldnt be able to find out who I am by a simple ip address.

http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl...

By doing an IP WHOIS, you can find out my general location, but its not entirely accurate, because if you do look up my ip with the link, I am not in Atlanta. I have a dynamic IP and change reset it a simple reassign DHCP or rebooting my router. It is not illegal to obtain your ip address either. If you visited my website, not only does my webserver (Apache) log you, I can as well via PHP.

Hope that helps.
Any site you go to logs your IP. They will not find out who you are, but can find out where your from. I'm not talking about your home address, but your local internet service providers address.
The best way to learn is to see what you find:

http://network-tools.com/

Click on Whois. Scroll to bottom and it should read "Your IP address." Copy and paste that number in the field and lookup "whois" again.

Click on "trace" and enter your computer's ip # (aka local host) - the number that comes up when you first open the page.
Go to this site (Gibson Shields Up)
https://www.grc.com/

Scroll down & see if they are able to detect your IP address, from the nature of your connection and settings on your computer and your ISP settings.

There's various tests you can run at this site, to determine how much your computer is advertising about what your connection details are.
http://www.grc.com/

I suggest you run all the Shields Up tests and follow the advice to limit your connection info as much as possible. You probably do not want web sites to be collecting info like your credit card account numbers, social security number etc.

If you have a firewall, it should have a log of hacker attacks on your computer. Depending on the quality of that firewall protection, you can then back trace the IP address of the attacker.

For example, I happen to know that most of the attacks on my home PC are coming from someone located in East St Louis.

There are other sites that perform similar services. You can ask about such places via category Computers / Internet.
