Why would happen if I sign a vehicle over to someone but let them keep the the tags on it?

Okay, Its not me... its my husband... he is signing over our truck to his drunk, unlicenced father... because his father is an a.sshole basically... Ins. has been dropped on the truck and the title will be signed over this weekend or sometime soon. My husband is telling me that he is going to let his father use the tags until the end of the month when they need to be re-newed. What will happen if he gets caught with our tags on what is technically his truck.
How can I tell my husband this is such a stupid thing to do? I am FINISHED paying for my in-laws stupidity and this to me seems to be asking for more trouble.

Answers:
Depends on the law for the state you are in, in some the tags belong to you and are removed, in others they go with the vehicle. Just make sure you notify the DMV that you no longer own the vehicle.

When the tags run out that will probably be the end of his driving anyway, since he can't renew them without insurance, and it takes a license to get insurance.

When you get the notice from the tow company for the bill for impounding the truck, just send them a copy of the form where you showed you no longer own it.

it's illegal but the dad will be liable since he left the plates on once he took possesion
