Medicare normally pays for the first 30 days. Then he must meet a spend down. His money can go to a prepaid burial or for personal items like a TV for his room for example. He can't give you his money. Any money or property sold within the last five years are subject to being looked at and a determination made if it was a effort to hide financial resources. If he has any money or property if then goes to take care of him. After his finances are exhausted then medicare will kick in. Most nursing homes are for profit and have full time staff looking for ways to get maximum reimbursement for his care. For example private pay could cost $300.00 a day and medicare reimbursement is only $100.00 a day. The nursing home wants the 300 and will look at every way possible to make sure the they collect the 300 and not the 100.
go to you local ss office get the latest information on nursing home care benifits from the people who are paid to provide the help
Simply call medicare, they will tell you.. As far as money he needs to get a will otherwise the state will take it after he passes to pay for his nursing home for anything that insurance doesn't cover.
