Is it illegal to play ANY kind of game in the street?
We have some neightbors and they are total asses and they constantly call the cops on us. This last time the cops said it was illegal to play ANY kind of game in the street. We live in a very small subdivision and there is only one outlet so there isn't a lot of traffic besides the people that live there. Is that true, or is he bullshitting us? Chicago, illinois area. Is there any way we can fight this?
Answers:
Yeah, first of all ignore this butthead. They are obviously jealous of your fun.
After a while the cops will start to see that it's your neighbors who are the real hazard. What if the call that the officer gets dispatched to is your crazy neighbor, and meanwhile a bank gets robbed?
The police like to see one thing- the peace kept!
So, when an officer comes by, be as cool as a cucumber NO MATTER WHAT.
Soon the rest of the neighbors, as well as the local chapter of police officers will call this idiot out for what he /she really is- a pest!
Good luck, and keep on playin'
You can not play in the street.
there is a muni code that reads you can't run or skip in a parking lot. You can get a ticket for just about anything. I love my job
Man, that's totally lame! I grew up playing in the street -- kickball, whiffle ball, hockey, bike riding. Some people just totally suck -- where do they expect you to go to get exercise and have fun? It's not like you're on a main road! These are probably the same people that moan about kids now adays playing too many video games, and being obese, etc. I hope you can figure something out! Perhaps you can ask these neighbors of yours if they would prefer you use their yard next time.
It is illegal to BE in the street for any purpose except driving and crossing the street. You would be the first to complain when someone failed to see you in the street on one of you ended up DEAD.
Maybe. I suggest you look at your city ordinances and neighborhood covenants. That is where you will find your answer. Also, you might have a cause of action for harassment (but not enough is posted here for such a cause of action). Go see an attorney if you are bothered by it.
That depends. Some towns have ordinances against it, most do not. But either way, people shouldn't complain about you as long as you're playing on a dead-end street or cul-de-sac, not making noise at inappropriate hours, not constantly tossing your ball into people's yards, and if you show motorists some courtesy and quickly move out of their way when a car approaches. Personally, I think kids should be able to play in the street (within reason), but I absolutely hate disrespectful little punks who act like I'm driving through THEIR playground.
