Can i have a wide sorta patent?

I mean...only i have the right to create a perpetual motion machine which works on principles of magnetic attraction/repletion
...its just an example

Now if someone else make another design for this machine which does the same thing and works on principles of magnetism...but the design is different over all than mine...he will not allowed the patent, or any one will not be allowed to use this design he has made cause I have a patent filed.
Is this sorta situation possible?...or is there such sora patent?
