I think it would depend on the State you live in, but it certainly is very dangerous not to have some type of reflector or lighting on a pedal bike. In most States, if you are seen by any law enforcement officer riding a pedal bike without lighting or reflectors at night, you will no doubt be seen as a suspicious character and be stopped, which I'm sure you don't want to happen. I would bet though that if you were seen without such lighting or reflectors on your pedal bike at night you would probable get a warning and be told not to ride you bike at night.

as long as you carry a light on an arm band, no problem. The light does not necessarily be attached to the bike..
Most places in the world have ordinances requiring lights on vehicles at night.
If you have a pedal bike, and you are riding at night without a working light, you will not be in the land of the living for very long.
This is because when it is dark, pedestrians and bicyclists can be rather invisible until they are so close it is too late to avoid running them down by car or truck.
But if they have working light, reflectors, wear light clothing, ride safe, then different story.

Yes, but if you're in the UK, don't worry from the legal point of view, the police don't do anything about it. However, I would strongly heed the advice of the bus driver! And the person who said that there are only guidelines for cyclists is incorrect.
Well, I know for a fact that your supposed to ahve a red light in back, ahead light in front and reflectors on the peddles. (in sonoma co. ca.)
You should have a white light to the front and a red light and reflector to the rear.The police in UK do sometimes have a crack down and do something about so font listen to silly answers that say they wont bother.
