Is it legal for schools in Northern Ireland, grammar or otherwise, to make boys keep their hair "short".
My school, A boys grammar school in Northern Ireland, forces us to keep our hair short. As you can imagine, this isn't a problem for 98 percent of the school as they would prefer it that way, however, a few others and I dread September the Second when we will have to visit the barbers in preparation. Is there any way out of this?
P.s. please no 'get ur hair cut, u freak' comments, I've seen it all before, right down to the appalling grammar.

If all girls' schools in the same education authority applied the same rule to their pupils, and all mixed schools applied the same rule to all their pupils regardless of sex, then yes, it is legal. If other schools do not apply that same rule to female pupils, then it is illegal under the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, and also, as the school is funded by public money, illegal under the Gender Equality Act 2006. Schools should be encouraging equailty, not reinforcing Victorian attitudes, otherwise the gender pay gap will never close, women will be expected to do all the housework until the 29th Century, and men will never have equal childcare rights. No doubt they don't teach you cooking in your school, and you all have to play rugby without having a choice of playing netball if you want? Single sex schools and faith schools should all be abolished, all they do is promote inequality and discrimination.
Schools have regulations for a reason. So stick to them. In most jobs you will have in decent jobs you will have to maintain a short neat haircut. Long hair on grown men is just sad.
yes it is perfectly leagal because it falls under your schools dress code and dude i agree wit you same problem for me in america
Yes.
Yes
I teach in Scotland, we can request pupils wear uniform, etc etc but can't enforce legally. kids can arrive in jeans, t-shirt and with dreads 3 ft long and if we call parents and they don't back us up then there is nothing we can do although some heads will still send kids home as most parents wont go to court over it. It depends if you think it is worth the hassle of taking a stance.
yep hun sorry but its part of uniform rules so if you dont stick to the rules as agreed when you first signed into the school they can force you to leave or cut it,try tying it up and see what they say it looks tidy then and try the sexual discrimination route hun it worked for the girls where trousers were conserned so worth a try eh.btw hello from c/down xxx
Well thats terrible and i don't think they can legally enforce it but they might send you home or say if you won't follow the rules you might have to leave but they don't have the right to march you down their to get it cut or cut it themselfs if they try threaten them with legal action and think glad of yourself to leave such a terrible place. In my old school girls weren't allowed to curl their hair whats with that? when will they learn that being so strict can seriously make kids go the other way.]
Hair doesn't make someone good at their job or a 'sad' person i know many teachers/doctors/solicitors who are very good in my local area and they all have long hair ...but this is really just my rebeliousness alot of people are more than happy to just be sheep
My experience compels me to say `pass' but hubby says he has heard of this before.
Do your parents know how things are here? How approachable do you think school would be?
If all else fails you may as well `bite the bullet' on this one and just go with the flow... might be easiest option.
Sorry I cant really see any other way.
If its a private school that you pay to attend then you will just have to get you haircut. They can set any rules they like, or you dont go.
If its a state school then as long as it doesnt affect yours or others safety, like in science or pe you would have to tie it back, but it shouldnt be a problem.
