How to ask about coming back from a lay off?

Im asking for a guy I work with. A few weeks ago my boss laid of this guy and another. This happens every year during Summer, it gets slow and a few get laid off...They usually get rehired back in a month or so. This guy is one of the newest working - and Im wanting him to come back. So how does he ask the boss if their is work yet, if the lay off is done, when/if he can return to work...

Answers:
Just calling and asking or actually physically showing up and talking to the boss is fine. It shows an eagerness and reliability.

Why not just come right out and ask if "I can come back" if no "when".
Work for free a couple hours a week during the summer for the boss, to let him know he is dedicated to the company.
he should wait for them to call him back when they're ready. in the meantime, he should look at other jobs (just in case)
