Is it legal for my boss to ask annother employee ---?
to spy on certain people and report all information back to him?
Answers:
Unfortunately, yes, if the information is related to conduct in the workplace.
Wow dunno- this is amazing- i'll have to answer so i can read the right answer. ^^
If he has that much time then HE'S not doing his job properly. When you're in a role who has time to get caught up in the nuances of office politics and what not?
Maybe you should report him for wasting time. He sounds like a middle management jobsworth who should be happy to have a job.
It is done ALL the time. This is the career path for many employees.
What is all this "is it legal" crap? The law is not there to regulate every waking moment! If your boss is employing unethical tactics like this, either refuse to co-operate or leave!
Yes it is but the person asked to do the spying should be of a grade higher than work colleagues!
"spy" or listen and watch what happens around the office.
Unless there is suspicion of inappropriate behavior I think it is a murky gray area you could easily get into hot water for. See a lawyer if you are in doubt.
If he is asking for information relative to the operations of the business or if he is collecting data on slackers, then it is legal.
If he is attempting to collect information in order to discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation then that's illegal.
Yes but the employee can refuse.
Absolutely. If you don't want to get caught, don't do it. If you are cheating the company, you deserve to be reported. Those who are doing the right thing are in no danger.

This is not a question of law as there is no law in any state which regulates what an employer may ask of an employee.
Your employer may LEGALLY ask one employee to kill another. The mere asking is not illegal but the solicitation is.
In your particular case, there is absolutely nothing illegal about the asking.
yes it is legal the boss can pick any employee to check on others and report back to them sometimes you never know whom this person is because it will get back to the employees and there act differantly to the way they work and you can also full out with each other over this . my motto is never trust anyone you work with you never know what there up to next .x
No law saying the boss can't ask you to do a job - unless it is a job without your clothes and strictly for him (or her) and sex is involved.
I would have to ask the boss "Why do you think I would want to?" If he threatened you with your JOB if you DON'T, you would have to have a copy of your job description and the company rules and regulations manual handy - THEN you may have room to back out - I will check back to see more answers -
Yes they can spy on you, but cannot act on the information received about what you do out of working time as long as it does not affect the company.
As long as that spying isn't being done in the restroom, it's legal.
In addition to that, many states have set certain case precedents which require a business owner to warn employees in advance if their telephone conversations and computer usage may be monitored.
.
I don't need tae be asked. I clype daily tae further my career!! All good employees should drop their colleagues in it, something tae dae with getting a brown nose, I've heard! Need tae keep it quiet or ye will make loads of enemies!!!!
