I recently moved out of my ex gf's house.?

i just recently moved out of my ex's where we lived with her parents i signed no lease and had no verbal agreement in what to pay for rent now they are threatenin to sue me for back rent is that legal or they have no case because i signed no lease or had no verbal agreement?

Answers:
if there was no verbal agreement than they wont get anything...but if you paid any kind of rent it will be hard to explain why you paid them if there wasnt a verbal agreement...so if you never paid them any $$ you should be a-ok however if you have youll have explining to do...

They have absolutley NO case.
Damn, I would just leave town.
let em take ya to court
theres no proof. they be screwed
Was this a trailer? Sounds like a COPS episode.
They're just venting frustration...not worth the cost to pursue you...
Anyone can sue anyone for anything. - they can't "win" the case if there was no agreement.
No lease, no agreement, no backpayment of rent.

Do what your conscience tells you is the proper thing to do. (and dont lie to yourself to justify not paying)
Legally they cant do anything about it cause like you said there was no agreement... No contract. You cant use a verbal agreement in court! you have to show proof. As long as they didnt support you completely ... there shouldnt be any issues there... they are just trying to scare you...Good luck buddy
They have no solid ground to stand on nowadays everything has to be documented to be proved.
If you have paper about lease agreement which was in black and white more proof than verbal agreement then get your own lawyer with that paper you don't have to worry if you don't have it then you are screwed ... so be careful whoever you pick the lady for your future wife OK take care
you have to have a signed lease or something that says you were to pay rent at this particular location in order for them to sue,
Freeloading huh? Pay them what you should as a Man of integrity and move on.Playing house can cost money..
I would say they have a hard case to make, but then some judge awarded an old lady how many millions of dollars because McDonald's sold her hot coffee?
without a lease or verbal agreement It would just be their word against yours and chances are it would cost them more in court costs and laywer fees than what they could get from you. They are probably just making empty threats because the relationship between you and their daughter is over.
Was it assumed that you were going to live there for free? It's one of those their word against yours thing. In general, you may want to think about giving them something (which is fair, of course) for letting you stay there. It might make the problem go away and stop a lot of time being wasted.
That sounds a little messy. Without any kind of agreement, I do not think you have any financial liability. Isn't it kind of strange to live with your gf at her parent's place and pay rent? How did you figure out how much to pay, I assume you had some sort of discussion about it. Whatever the situation, I would not think that you are responsible.
If there was no rental agreement, they have no case and if it actually goes to court, you should hire a lawyer and countersue to cover your costs, and anything else your lawyer comes up with.
I don't believe so. Might be state laws you need to check. But I do know that in FL, there is something to do with...if you recieve mail for awhile at a residence, you are considered a resident...and could wait for them to legaly evict you before you leave. :-)

PS: Nice In-laws :-(
An unwritten contract can be enforced, if proven.

The existence of a contract can be proven by the past behavior of the parties.

The problem I see here for them is that if you didn't pay anything, there isn't any evidence of an agreement to pay, and if you did pay, there's nothing to sue for.

Why not ask them what's really bothering them. I doubt that it has anything to do with money.
They have no case really. Unless out of a fit of anger you might have said "you'll just have to sue me then!" Some judges take that as admittance to something you owe. My gf tried to do the same thing to me. I always said I would help pay but never actually did. The judge (a friend of my lawyers) said that unless I gave a date, a specific amount or had it in writing she didn't have a case. Good luck though.

Women can suck sometimes!
i would assume that they couldnt do anything because thers no written agreement,,,,,but if youve been paying them for rent with something trackable ( like checks or money orders), they may be able to show that youve been paying "x" amount of dollars each month to live there.

if you really do owe them the money i suggest you pay it.
If there was no written lease or contract that you signed, they can't sue you.well, they can sue - anyone can sue - but they won't get anything from you.

Looks like you made a really, really good decision to get out of THAT situation!!!
Usually i don't like to go read through past questions but in your case it helps to get the truth out. Looks to me like it was not your gfs house it was her parents house that she was allowed to stay in and then invited you to live in her parents house and it doesn't sound like you are much of a man for living like that. Looks like you screwed up and got kicked out her parents house and you are trying to give her a hard time and so her parents told you if you try to take anything that may not really belong to you anyway or take them to court they will counter sue you for back rent which if you have not been helping out it really shows what kind of man you are. I would feel too ashamed to approach her or her parents ever again if I were you. you need to grow up
did you use no water? did you use no electricity? did you create no garbage? No one cleaned up after you, right? did you watch TV? who washed your clothes? you bought and cooked your own food, right? did you contribute to wear and tear? you had no lease or verbal contract. this alone opens the question as to just why were you there? In otherwords, you have no documented protection for being in that house. Ild say they can legally burn your butt!
You probably agreed to pay a portion of the expenses as long as you lived there. But not beyond. How are they going to prove the back rent??
