Sending young people to prison?

Oftentimes this has a reversal effect, I think there should be other ways to try to help our young people , besides jail .One could , for example on a person who calls a police officer a pig, make them wear a sign that says ,with a live pig, 'THIS NOT A POLICEMAN!! for 3 or 4 months , walking around where he or she lives, it might be humilliating ,but if it helps why not? Do you have other alternatives?

Personal situation:

My daughters Dad was put in a "boys home" (aka detention center) at the age of 12... his Dad had gotten arrested and his step Mom took off, his biological Mom was 6 states away and had already signed over her rights... so for 4 years he was there, and in those 4 years he stole 3 vehicles... each time he made it to his Grandma's house and got arrested and taken right back up there... the 3rd and final time he made it home (in a dump truck) at 16, and was arrested, he spent 3 months in county jail and went back to live with his Grandparents. Between 16 and 18 he was on probation in 2 counties and had been arrested about 6 more times... the last time he was sentenced to state prison (5 years) for burglary... he is there until January of this year, and I have seen a lot of changes in him... not for the best either. I personally wish for our daughters sake someone had stepped in and not just thrown him in the system...

Do the crime..do the time.
No ifs ands or buts...do the crime ...do the time. If we stuck to that the criminals might think twice. Today..they know that they will be out tonight and can continue on with their lifestyle. These days there peers could be their parents. What a great example that is. I know it's not a great place to be...but they get TV's..meals served to them..clothes are laundered at no charge.I have to pay for these things. You tell me.
If a young man sexually assaulted you, would you want him in prison or walking free with a sign that said "Rapist" on his shirt?
most juvenile offenders have 10 to 15 prior crimes before actually being sent to jail , if you cant change after being given that many chances you deserve the time , as a state juvenile corrections officer please believe me when i say they youths that are incarcerated in my facility need to be there . They are violent and often times have psycological problems . Now instead of waiting for you to be their next victim they are getting counseling , education and free health care , when you think about what they did to deserve jail compared to all the benefits they get while in there , you might want to admit they are getting a better deal then most young people .
