Jail/sentences?

Hi,

I am clueless about all things law/jail related. If someone is given for instance a five year sentence for a charge... does that mean they serve five years to the day? Someone told me that with overcrowding and good behavior and such, that most people serve about half of what they are actually sentenced to. Is that the exception or the norm? Any idea?

thanks for any answers in advance.

Answers:
No, they won’t serve five years, almost everyone gets out early unless they are really stupid and make a lot of trouble in jail. Most serve about ½ to 2/3 of their time and get out. But depending on the crime and how much space the jail has they make get out after serving less then a year.

I am wondering the same thing because my boyfriend is in for 30 days and hes bein in there since the 8th, but my step-dad said that they don't serve the full time that they get out early.
