Is it illegal for my boss to fire me due to an injury?

I was in a car accident a couple days ago and was diagnosed with whiplash. The doctor gave me muscle relaxers and told me I could work as long as I didn't do anything that caused me pain.

Part of my job involves lifting chairs and moving tables around and I don't know if it would be safe to do that. But I'm afraid to tell my boss I had an injury because he might fire me on the basis that it interferes with my job performance. Is that illegal?

(If it matters, I live in the state of Texas.)

Answers:
I would check with the Texas Labor Board but I'd be hard pressed to think that your boss could fire you for being injured. Since it it temporary your boss can get a stand in for you.

as long as you were not on probation yes it is illegal
of course he can , especially in Texas . Unless the car accident had something to do with work . Surely he will give you a couple days off to rest though
Probably. You sure try being a pilot and break your leg skiing. Boss's just don't understand.
Does your job provide short-term disability insurance? Regardless, just have your doctor write instructions for you not to lift chairs or move tables around for X number of weeks.

He can't just fire you though.
I dont think he will fire you because of an injury. But you should take it easy and be honest with your boss. Just tell him what happend and you should be fine. =)
He cant fire you if you have a dr's note.. but if he doesnt have light duty work he doesnt have to let you work until you can return to full duty..
Lots of people have accidents. If your boss has any compassion about him at all, he will give you a chance to heal. I doubt seriously he will fire you because of that. Give him a chance, he's probably a very nice guy.
you should go back to your doctor and get a note that says .6you should not be lifting more than x amount of lb. and you should also tell him what sort of a job you have...he may take you off work for a week or two .... you may not get paid for those weeks but you will be safe from ferther injury's
As long as your injury is not work related, it is not illegal for him to fire you. If you can't do your job properly, you need to either get a doctors note that says what your restrictions are and make sure those are going to be ok with your boss or take some time off to get better.
Wow, you people are stupid. Of course its illegal, he has to give you time off or temporarily replace you but he can't fire you. If he fires you, you've got yourself a lawsuit.
no thats legal

an employer can fire you no matter what
