What is a Victim Advocate?
Answer:
There are different types of victim advocacy, but in general a Victim Advocate is someone who speaks for the victim - someone who represents the best interests of the victim. Too often, victims of crimes were seen to be victimized at least twice - once by the crime, and again by the "system" (though not necessarily by intention). The theory is that someone needs to assist the victim to recover from the crime, to avail himself/herself to available financial/counseling/etc. programs that might be hidden away in a tangle of bureaucracy, to seek redress from the criminal, to help the victim assist in, or at least be aware of the sanctions faced by the criminal, and to otherwise assist the victim in getting life back to normal.

A victim advocate is a social worker who counsels a crime victim, particularly victims of violent crimes like rape or armed robbery. The advocate will assist the victim in obtaining psychological therapy or other rehab. If there was any valuable property taken, the advocate may work with the victim to get it back if it was recovered by the police. The advocate will also assist the victim in court, particularly in the preparation of a "victim's impact statement" which the victim may read to the judge and jury at sentencing after the criminal has been convicted.
