Should ex's place children in the middle of fights?

Son's ex calls constantly while she is drunk and puts their 5 year old son on the phone and you can hear her tell him what to say.(such as: why don't you love me anymore? You're a liar and an a$$hole!, etc. which reduces the child to tears. She kept this up for 3 hours, son had enough and called police since this would be a probation violation against her and she swore and yelled at the police over the phone too. Should son call and report this action to her probation officer or should he have handled it differently?

Answers:
Tape her, keep a diary or journal of every call like that. Build a case to get custody from her. (Fight fire with fire and keep your cards close to your chest) She is abusing that child, but, you have to be smart before you make your move.

No, children should be out of the way when parents, ex's, mother-in-law etc. have anything more than the mildest of arguements.

Sometimes uncaring adults delierately put children at risk, forcing caring adults to back down, in the interests of protecting the children.

In case you describe, police and probation officer should be notified.

It would help if you had a recording device on the phone, to collect evidence.
It might help if you just hung up.
It is absolutely not ok. I'm suprised the police didn't have human services pick him up then. If I were you I would fight for custody. I would record the phone calls and let your attorney listen to them. I can't imagine a judge leaving him with her.
Not at all. She is sick.
My parents put me in the middle of their divorce, actualy, it was my dad. It still affects me to this day and im 26. I hated my mom for such a long time because my dad would spend hours every weekend putting down my mom. Parents dont relize how a divorce impacts their children.

I think everyone needs to get counsling ASAP, excepecially for the little boy.
If the mother has custody in this situation then the father should do everything he can to obtain custody. I'm not sure how her actions could be a probation violation, though unless you're speaking of the drinking. He should keep a journal and document things the best he can. I'm not sure what state he is in.he will want to check laws before he tapes her. In some states it is against the law to tape a person without their knowledge but some states are one party states. That's where is one person knows their being taped (your son) than it's legal. By all means he should at least call her probation officer and tell him that she's drinking. Best of luck
