Should the US ban the study of foreign languages in public institutions?
with all the hoo-hah about making english the "official" language of this country, should the US go a step further and simply ban outright the teaching of any foreign language in public or private institutions?
to take this a step further, since english is well on its way to becoming "official", for better or for worse, does this mean that latin words and phrases have to be removed from the legal and medical professions?
Answer:
That would be taking it to the extreme, and not to our benefit. English may be our language, but there are a lot of other languges in the world. It would be very much to our best interest to encourage the teaching of foreign languages.
you lack basic understandings of this country and life. thank you for wasting all of our times with that Q. english should be the official language and any languages should be taught in schools
"If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for me!!"
On the contrary. The U.S. should make a second language a mandatory condition for getting a college degree, perhaps even for getting a high school diploma. Most U.S. citizens have a very narrow, parochial view of the world. Knowledge of a foreign language or culture is helpful in combatting this.
Besides, if more people were learning Arabic, the U.S. might be a bit better equipped in the "War on Terror."
First of all the english language is the unofficial language of the world let along the US so lets just stop this "hoo-hah" abt making it official or not. Who the hell cares?
And to go as far as banning others is out right stupid, and should i say un-american!
A ban on teaching foreign languages in all public or private institutions is wrong on so many levels.
First, private institutions can establish regulations they wish because they don't receive public funds.
Second, public schools are responsibile for educating the population. To ban the study of another language would only put the US educational system even further behind.
By the way how do you propose that our diplomats conduct business in other countries if they don't have an opportunity to study another language here?
First off, English, the language of Shakespeare needs no protection.
Second, I wouldn't worry, the majority of people here barely learn English.
Thrird, Language is understanding. I can't imagine a worse thing to do than to ban its teaching.
Most Americans appear to have difficulty learning English. The spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure I see on this website, leads me to believe that perhaps we should concentrate on learning English, before tackling any other languages. With that being said, I suppose the answer is yes!
For as much as you wish for America, its unconstitutional and not in agreement with the law of the land ,The Supreme Court decisions, Why are Americans afraid of foreign languages! most of the rest of the world teaches two or more.
