Please give me reasons WHY morality should be legislated.?
I am in need of understanding and getting more ideas about legislating morality. I am currently working on a debate if morality should be legislated or not. I am FOR morality should be legislated. Please give me good ideas, thoughts, opinions about why morality SHOULD BE legislated.
Answer:
Well I think it shouldnt be legislated because it comes down to personal choice. Each individual decides for him or herself what is moral and what is not. Some things are of course universal but others are not. For instance-if I smoke a joint in my own home when by myself -who am I hurting? No one but myself. If my husband and I decide to have some kinky sex who's business is it but ours?
Laws to protect people from themselves rarely work and end up costing taxpayers a lot for little return. This has been shown in the War on Drugs- this war has been being fought for (I think) over 15 years with no reduction in the number of people using drugs. We have millions of people in jail (that we support with our tax dollars) but it hasnt changed the percentage of people who use at all in fact it has increased. In this case legislating morality did not work.
I know this is opposite of what you were asking but if you dont know the oppposite how can you show why you think it should be legislated?
I
Because everyone's ideas of what is moral is so different. My idea of what is moral may not be my neighbors, and I do not want to be pushed into following everyone elses beliefs. I know that is not what you were looking for. Maybe try some religious sites for ideas.
People usually quote the bible for this type of thing, yet it is quite the pitfall, to legislate morality assumes that there exists a common moral code, since no such code exists, attempts to legislate morality will be questionable at best. I would perhaps focus on the legislation of ethical activities (unethical business practices) and only then start branch out towards more "moral" issues...
It would be more difficult to argue against the legislation of unethical activities, and after you've won on this point you may be able to win some other moral points...
be careful, however, on what you claim as "moral" some people's view of morals are not as strict as others, attempts to overly legislate morality impose upon people's personal freedom...
example: most people would agree with legislation preventing sexual interaction between an adult and a child, but hopefully nobody would agree with any attempt to legislate against homosexual relationships between consenting adults.
