Why is the government trying to regulate minimum standard MPG that an auto-maker must make?

Question Details: Why is the government trying to regulate minimum standard MPG that an auto-maker must make, shouldn't they be focussed on what comes out in the form of emmissions?

FROM A REGULATORY standpoint :
The issue SHOULD BE WHAT is EFFECTING society harmfully... if I make a car that only gets 10 mpg but it is the SAFEST and CLEANEST automobile around ~ what would you say?

Don't get me wrong I want the "80-100 mpg car" as much as the next guy, but I do not think the government really has any business FORCING this out of the manufacturer... such a demand for BETTER MILEAGE must come from the CITIZEN-BUYER.

HOW DOES THIS SOUND??
Focus on the POLLUTION/emmision end of the stick from the GOV regulation angle and let the PUBLIC BUYER's DEMAND dictate the function of BETTER MILEAGE

PEOPLE have to make DECISIONS on WHAT THEY PURCHASE : consumer DRIVEN demand.

Answers:
Because liberal politicians believe that everything they regard as undesirable can and should be remedied by a law.

Present day cars are consuming the limited natural resources available , it is there fore necessary that vehicles which consume minimum of the scarce natural resource are preferred. So the governments world over have to limit this as now number of autos the world over are increasing much faster that ever before. So it is a necessary required limitation.
Of course we need better emission standards, but we also need to reduce our dependance on fossil fuels both for ecological and political reasons. Oil resources are finite and the more we drive gas hogs, the more they are going to want to drill for oil in Alaska and the Gulf and other places where the environment is at risk. Do you really want another Exxon-Valdez type spill? Do you really want to be at the mercy of the Middle Eastern countries for our biggest energy resource? If you're looking for an excuse to drive a big 'ol SUV, you can rationalize all you want, but its still environmentally unfriendly even if you have the cleanest emissions possible.
Save money, save oil, reduce pollution.
