how many hours a company can make an employee work before breaking the law?

Answers:
There are a lot of factors -- some states have different regulations, and there are some industries where it is different too. Some places you don't have to get a break at all.

In what state?
Huh? How is making an employee work breaking the law?
As long as they are paying you as many as tthey want, and as many as you are willing to work til you quit.
They can demand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You, on the other hand, have the right to quit. That's about the size of it. The only legal requirements they have to meet is breaks and overtime pay (other than safety, of course).

Oh, and the state is irrelevant. Labor laws are Federal.
