How can you detect if a cashier's check is fake?
I'm curious how a person can detect if a cashier's check is real first hand without having to go to a bank and ask? Are there certain security marks to look for?

Water marks and perforations
Try to cash it and if security steps up behind you, it was fake.
The modern fakers of cashier's checks are putting watermarks and doing things that make them appear real until you send them through the bank.. and they find that the account the money is drawn on (maybe even the bank named...) doesn't exist.
So... its now unsafe to accept cashier's checks.
NEVER accept a cashier's check for a purchase whent hey want to overpay, let you keep half the overpayment and for you to use western union to wire the "refund"
Those are NEVER good.
Unfortunately its not possible. To make the matter worse, even if it is fake and you go deposit it, by law the bank cash it. Later (in 2-3 weeks) when they find out is fake, they will come after you!!
so be careful
