Am I required by law to change my passport picture if I look very different from when it was taken?

its no where near expiring, but since the photo in the passport Ive lost 120 lbs (60kg) and am trying to lose 20 more. I really dont look anything like the photo. am I required by law to update the picture? will I have problems travelling if I dont? American passport.

Answers:
Your passport is expected to be used to identify who you are. If you do not look at all like the person in the passport, you may have a very difficult time in other countries, the extent of which will be determined by the attitude of the officials with whom you are interacting. It is in your own best interest to update your passport.

While you are not requred to get a new picture, it might be wise. You don't want to have hassles trying to cross borders because of the difference between your picture and your current appearance.
