I constantly make products that I want to sell by combining various other products. What is legal?
for example, if I make laundry detergent out of Ivory soap, Arm & Hammer baking soda, and 20 Mule Team borax... would I be committing a crime if I sold it, or does purchasing their product automatically give me the right to do so? Basically, I need general legal help.
Answers:
Generally, the ingredients in products are protected under patents and copyrights. So, I suspect that Ivory Soap could demand that you not use their patented property to make your product. You would have to start with the basic ingredients to make your own product.
An example: I make an expensive watch by using a copy of a Rolex body but the actual mechanism is a Timex. I call it a "Tolex". Guess what. I get sued by Rolex for infringing on their patent and copyrighted name and Timex does the same.
You cannot sell another persons product in any way without getting permission from them.
You may be breaking patent or trademark laws and that can land you in jail.
