My friend worked at WaMu is it illegal for them to fire her if she got sick?

shes been working there for a month, and 2 days ago she called in and said she was to sick to go and they told her if she didnt come in she didnt have a job, would a doctors note from the doctor yesterday be worth anything

Answers:
She is not covered under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) since she had only worked there one month. To be covered by FMLA, she would had to have worked for that employer at least 1250 hours in the year previous to the absence.

As long as she wasn't fired for discriminatory purposes (race, gender, etc) she can be fired for just about any reason.

Hopefully she can find a better job soon!

Nope, most places have at-will employment.

Plus I think most places dont really expect for someone to be out right after they start.
Depends on what the company's policy is regarding sick days. If she's only been there a month some employers have a 90 probation period you cannot be out no matter what.
I'd also say it depended on what was wrong with her that she couldn't come in.
has she had prior absences? Most companies have a 90 day probationary period.. If she has missed too many times then yes they can fire her..
If your friend has only been working there for a month, she may have been on probation. In many cases, probationary employees can be fired without recourse. She should have gotten a copy of the personnel policies and procedures when she started work, she should read them and see what, if any, rights she might have. I doubt that a doctor's note would make any difference.
NO. they do not have to disclose why they fired her. SORRY
It really depends on the state she works in. If she is in a right to work state they can fire her at anytime for any or no reason. Pres Clinton however did pass FMLA and that states that the employer has to keep your position for you for 12 weeks if you are out due to illness of taking care of a sick family member, so if she wanted to fight it she could contact the FEDERAL (dont bother with state) labor board and make a claim against her employer.
