In the state of Arizona, can your employer fire you after you have put in your notice?
My co-worker put in his two weeks notice and we were wondering if our employer can fire him if she decides to be mean.
Answers:
It all depends on whether Arizona is a "work at will" state. If so, then yeah, the company can fire him.
It happened here (in Texas) to my daugher-in-law. My son is in the Coast Guard, and they were being transferred to Michigan. She planned on working the two weeks, but they terminated her as soon as she put her two weeks notice in.
There and the other 49 States!
Not without reason. Just putting in a two weeks notice isn't reason enough. Unless your friend is a horrible worker or is in his first three months of hire, he should be able to collect unemployment.
Edit:
The only way they get away with stuff like this is by people being uninformed about the laws and what their rights are. Educate yourself or you won't make it far in this world.

"An employer can fire you any time without any reason."
Bullshit. They can only do that in the 3 month trail period. If they wait to fire after that, they must have just cause or they are setting themselves up for a lawsuit or paying unemployment.
Where is it stated that an employer can fire you at *ANY* TIME* *WITHOUT* any reason?
Might be ture if you live in Britain, but that isn't true in the U.S..
An employer can fire you any time without any reason. The only exception is race, religion and a couple of other things covered by Equal Opportunity Employment Act.
Google Equal Opportunity Employment Act and you'll have your answer.
Yes, they can. As Scott points out, they will be setting themselves up to potentially pay unemployment. No lawsuits though.
