What does it mean when the defense fail to address a summons?

If the defense exceeds the time given to address a summons and then ask for an extension does this necessarily interpret a weak position for the defense?

Answers:
It typically means that it took the defendant time to get the paperwork to an attorney. Needing additional time for filing an answer is no indication of the merits of the case.
