Why aren't Canadian Same Sex Marriages Recognized?

I know that many people who immigrate to the US each year are married and their marriages are recognized by the US government. Since same sex marriage is legal in Canada, why doesn't the US government recognize those marriages? Also, if one state allows same sex marriage, how can another state not recognize that marriage?

Answer:
The Defense of Marriage Act declared that states do not have to give full faith and credit to marriages granted in other states, if those marriages are contrary to state law. In a similar way, the United States does not have any obligation to recognize any acts of a foreign country, except for within the context of treaties or other diplomatic acts. There is no such provision for recognizing marriages.

same reason they don't recognize a canadian driver's license.
well they are sure not recognized in heaven and those sick people are going to end up in hell unless they change their sick ways!
No government in the world treats the laws of another country as sovereign, except maybe in embassies. Canada, for instance, will not extradite accused murderers to the US because the US has the death penalty and Canada does not. If Canada osberved US law, then they would have no problem extraditing these criminals. It is the same thing with gay marriage. The US does not recognize Canada's laws.
Because a marriage is between a man and a woman. Because homosexuals want to claim that they are "married" to each other, and because legislators who burn with lust for each other, have passed legislation legalizing these perverse relationships, is no good reason for rational people to recognize this travesty.
Because same sex marriages are WRONG.

Because they are wrong, there is no reason to recognize them.
I don't know....but I don't think it should be called a marriage.

a marriage is the union of a man and a woman.

I just don't think it should be called the same thing....but whatever...

I'm not for or against gay marriage...do whatever makes you happy.

as for Canada yes it is legal and I don't know why the states doesn't recognize it. Maybe because america is stupid.

oh well.
It is thanks to former President Bill Clinton signing the Defense of Marriage Law. It says that the Federal Govt basically is against same-sex marriages and the States can make up their own mind. If a State doesn't want to recognize it then it doesn't have to. They simply have to pass a law saying they don't. Isn't America great that way? For the most part the States get to decide these issues, that is the way it SHOULD be. The States are all so different they have to be able to Govern their own beliefs for the most part.
they shouldnt be. gay marriage is wrong
Because they aren't real only targets!
