Can potential employers ask for your date of birth?
I completed an application and passed a preliminary exam. Now they want my SSN and date of birth to complete a backround check. I suspect this is a sneaky way around asking my age, and could lead to age discrimation. In other words, I'm over 40 and they now know this, and maybe they will pass me over to hire a younger person?
Answers:
Yes, they can, however t is your decision to give that information, I don't know which country you are looking for a job, but remember if in the States, any kind of discrimination is forbidden, if you are physically capable to develop the job, you must refuse to tell your age, they just have to qualify you by your academic background, expertise, knowledges and experience, if you fit, go for it.
wow, are you just that great looking that you dont look over 40?
And yes, they do use your birthdate to run background checks - I used to send in the info for the background checks at one of my jobs and date of birth was one of the pieces of information reuired.
They need to know something about you b4 they hire you
If a background check is required, you have to submit, but it is illegal to discriminate based on that. The problem: Prove they did/will do that.
Yes. The info is needed for all sorts of reasons. ie: pension, medical insurance. social security, and so on.
WE are on the war against terror, did you not know. You have no more rights.
They ask it everybody.
If they are doing a background check, I am guessing they will find out your age anyhow.
