Is it illegal to drive in the UK without carrying your drive licence with you?
as i watched a driving programme wich a young man was arrested for this
Answers:
hi.no its not as they will give you a ticket to produce you documents at a police station.
NO
I hope not. I *never* carry mine!
There is no requirement to carry your driving licence with you
Most people don't. If the police really want to see your licence or other documents you get a "producer" that means you have to show your licence etc. at the police station of your choice within 7 days. They can check licence, mot and insurance over the radio these days, if they want to.
No. "not yet" will be law soon though , thats the way the country is heading (a police state..!!)
No, i have lost mine and been driving without it for years!
No it's not. But I always carry the photo id in my wallet. If you don't have any details on you, you will be given a HORTi which gives you a week to produce your documents at a local Police station.
It sounds to me like the young man perhaps didn't have a licence, and therefore was driving illegaly (no licence - then no insurance!)
no but you get 7 days to produce it to a police station
No it isn't besides they give you about a week to produce your documents at your nearest police station.
No, but if you are stopped and the police officer feels it is necessary, they will ask you to produce it and any other relevant documents at your nearest police station (within 14 days I think but not sure)
No its not. They will arrest you though if they dont know for certain who you are because they have to be sure they are talking to the right person and any punishment goes to the right person.
If you can prove who you are you will be given a notice to produce your documents in 7 days at a police station nominated by you.
Most people carry their photocard on them though.
Its certainly not illegal to not have them on you whenever you drive.
Dont know about the license issue, I suspect it is perfectly all right to not have a license with you if you are not caught. It is quite all right to have a trunk of homicidal radioactive hamsters with you if you are not caught, as well. Just for you future reference. I found from personal experience that what they really frown on and will prosecute to the fullest extent is if they catch you driving around without a car. When I was out there on the thoroughfare, squatted down at an intersection signalling for a right turn while making engine noises with my mouth, I was arrested for driving without a vehicle. I guess the real problem was, since I was American, my imaginary car had the steering wheel on the wrong side. Imagine that!
There is nothing in English Law which requires the driver of a vehicle to carry his/her drivers license.
If stopped by the police and asked to show a driving license and one is not with the driver, all the police are ever able to do is ask the driver to present it at a police station [usually near where the driver lives] on or by a given date, usually within seven days.
This has happened to me on a number of occasions during my 40 plus years of driving. I never carry my license with me but just go for what in UK is called the 'presenter' method. Present license and insurance docs to the fuzz at a station near where I live etc...
In the TV pgm the man may have been arrested for something else but not for driving without carrying a license.
If a constable in uniform requests a driver to show their driving licence they must do so.If they cannot and refuse to give their name, address and date of birth the constable may arrest them.Usually if the driver hasn't got it with them they are issued with a form(HORT1)to produce at a police station within 7 days but they will not be given this option if the details mentioned are not given. It is likely that you misunderstood reason for arrest IE driving whilst not the holder of a driving license or disqualified from holding one.
No it isnt illegal to drive in the uk without carrying your license.
As I understand it [in the uk] it is not a legal requirement to carry any documents wether driving or not and perhaps better not to to avoid them being lost or stolen [thinking of identity fraud here]. If you are stopped for whatever reason i.e. a brake light out then you are given 3 days to produce the required documents . If it is a more serious offence then you might be taken to a police station to check things out !
I advice you better to take it with you just in case
if you lose you car,
or stolen,
or if a policemen will ask you for it, it just his right to do it don't be up set about it
and I think it didn't takes you big pocket to carry it, am I wrong?
so think by your self
