How long is it after a person dies that the will is read and those benefiting from it are told?

Answer:
the will is usually rad very quickly and beneficiaries should be infomred quickly. However the process of dishing out an 'estate' can be along and slow and expensive process - how long is a piece of string. If someone contests it the estate will be frozen pending a court hearing, and this wil swallow up money from the estate too.

Depends on if the will is probated or not. If it is not probated and all heirs agree, the stuff can be disbursed immediately, At least that is what we did.
"Reading" of wills is rarely done these days. Upon death the will should be promptly be filed in the probate court of the county where the deceased resided. Check there to see if it is filed. If so, get a copy for yourself and read it.
Most wills go through probate court. There is no official 'reading' as seen in movies. The beneficiaries are contacted, in writing. Each must sign several forms and monies/properties can be dispersed per the wishes of the deceased. It can take anywhere from a few months to over a year (or more).
When the solicitor and family of the person who died are READY to listen and know about the deed. Sometimes this is on the same day as the funeral.
Unfortunately I've had to be executor three times recently.
The will is rarely read - despite what you see on the films!
The beneficiaries are told as soon as the information is available to the executor(s)
But this may take months to establish contact with all the places which have handled the deceased' assets.
If you feel it is taking too long you may apply to the court to intervene - but beware, this may have a cost and deplete the estate.
If there is a big sum involved and you remain unhappy get a solicitor but (YOU GUESSED IT) costs will reduce the estate.
