How do I check on a Contractor's License?

A contractor that I think is shady gave me a contractor's license that I want to check out. I want to make sure it is valid and that there are no negative remarks on him. How do I go about this? It is in California.

Answers:
You need to contact your state contractor license board Every state has an appointed body to govern over these people. If he is not registered with the contractor lic. board then he probably is alittle shady

Most state's contracting boards have websites. Key in the contractor's name and if he has a license it should be there.
Call the city/county governement where the work is going to be done. If he has a license it will be thru them, he MUST have a license in EVERY area he works in. Having one in New Jersey does NOT let you work in New York. Having one in the Bronx does NOT let you work in Manhattan!
