Has anyone heard about Illinois trying to pass laws on health and attending church?
This morning on the news they talked about Illinois trying to make it mandatory for people to "shape up or pay up" AND
to "attend church or pay up" something about your paycheck being docked if otherwise. I am a christian woman but I do not believe in forcing people to attend church-you'd think that would cause more violence and church burnings,etc. Also how in the world can employers be allowed to dock your pay for being overweight or with other healt5h issues especially if they dont pay your medical bills or insurance?? One more thing, wouldnt these laws somehow be violating our constitutional rights- Equal rights and separation of Church and State or something?

I live in WI and heard of the "shape up or pay up" in my own town, but never the attend church thing... I think that the shape up idea is good in some ways if an employee is so overweight as to harm their health, but having to attend church? That's one of the most pretentious ideas I've ever heard of... Damn straight there'd be church burnings, I'd be one of the ringleaders to them...
I can't even find anything about this in the news. But yes, the government cannot require people to attend any religious service, that would be a violation of the Constitution.
There cannot be a "attend church or pay up" law or anything like that at all. That was the PURPOSE of the First Amendment Establishment Clause -- states (and countries) "established" a church and put heavy taxes on people who didn't go to that church.
A source would be helpful, but that's patently unconstitutional.
I haven't heard anything about that. Neither one will ever happen. Don't worry about it.
The only thing along those lines that will happen/has happened is that if you're out of shape, you might have to pay more for health insurance.
Make up your mind. Are employers trying to do this or is the government. The two options are worlds apart. Docking your pay implies the employer essentially paying you to do these things. Passing a law is a completely different issue.
The new "shape up or pay up" policy that some employers now have is simply intrusive and should be illegal. It makes more sense to have health insurance companies offer discounts to people who take care of themselves and stay in shape, and not let the employers try to dictate their employees personal lives just for the sake of maximizing productivity and profit. As for this "attend church or pay up" idea, there is no such thing. It's a given that not everybody in this country is a Christian, and such a policy would clearly be illegal as it discriminates against employees on the basis of religion.
