Are Hindus opposed to ALL animal euthanasia?
I understand the sensitivity of the recent ''Shambo'' controversy, and in that case a decision to slaughter was probably wrong, but I am shocked that many Hindus oppose the euthansia of suffering anaimals, cows or otherwise, in case it interferes with ''karma.''
While my feelings on this are very striong, I do not propose a debate about the issue here. I merely wish to know is it is very widespread among the Hindu world to refuse mercy to terminally or incurably suffering animals, if this is culture-specific, and/or if this has always been the case. I know a Hindu scholar has recently spoken in favour of animal euthansia, but is he in the minority?
Answers:
Cow for Hindus is mother "Gai Mata" in Hindi but
the bull is not called the Father.
According to a letter in today's daily Mail, apparently written by an asian and presumably a student of Hindu philosophy, the monks over reacted to the killing of Shambo.
The writer points out that although Hinduism does consider all life sacred, it is also a very pragmatic religion where the circumstances of any particular incident must be taken into consideration. In this sense, the culling of Shambo should have been seen by them as a sad necessity and not opposed, simply regretted.
