What if criminals, who have been violent toward others were mind wiped & re-taught ?

There are ways to wipe peoples minds already. Various forms of Brain washing have been done throughout history. There are also chemicals that can permanently erase memories too.

Instead of incarceration, these peoples minds would be wiped clean, completely erased of all their memories of everything they ever knew, did or who they were.

They would be like blank pages. They would be taught all over again. They would be given good role models to emulate from. At the end of their re-programming or training they would finally be able to live a productive, useful life. It would be similar to amnesia except this would be permanent & not a temporary change. This would squelch the need for jail & prison expansions. Tax dollars could then be better used for maintaining what already exists & for training & learning programs that would eventually enable to place the "New Born". back into society without fear of them reverting to their former criminal violence or activities. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't feel too sure about this method until a thirty year study had been conducted, and I suspect it stands to reason there would be a percentage who would return to their violent nature. Could a dark soul really be converted? Would the end result of this supposed conversion be a real human being? The longer I think about it the more it reminds me of George Orwell's Animal Farm, kind of sick. It's an interesting idea, Pixie, but, I'm reluctant to believe it to be a solution with which I'd be comfortable. I'm not sure I'd like to live in that world.

I'd just like to add that serial killers and the like are not of what you and I are made. Their souls are permanently black. They are in black, black holes of hell. I feel very strongly about this. Sure some criminals who have even murdered people may have been in a dark place, but not beyond redemption, perhaps. But, others dwelling in this world are not completely human, that is their soul isn't, the thing that inhabits the human body. Just my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

sounds like the making of a democrat
i think that would trample all over everyones constitutional rights. maybe the worst idea ever. next to hitlers final solution.
Where do you draw the line? Half the people in this country view a fetus as a life, so do you sterilize women when they go in for an abortion?
Well, why not just profile people based on their lives to see if they're LIKELY to become violent and do this to them??
I hope you're finding these thigs to be absurd, because they are.
Part of what makes our country great is the freedom to destroy your own life if you choose to do so, and nobody, not even our government is going to be there to pick you up by your bootstraps or even stop you in the first place.
These people have made CHOICES to be violent, they should be punished, but there's no proof that they wouldn't revert to their former lives and continue making the same CHOICES after something like this.
I certainly would never support the idea of the government controlling my life in any way like this. Once you open the door in one circumstance, NOBODY is free anymore.
When you try to make life better for one small group of people, you wind up reducing the quality of life for the majority.
As long as these people were repaying society for their past misdeeds, this would be a good idea. It should be reserved for Capital Crimes (violent rape, murder, sodomy, etc.) There should also be a way to ensure that the system could not be misused by unscrupulous politicians, law enforcement officials, rich people.
i think it should be up to the person
i think that even if they were brain washed they still would have that little piece of information in their mind some where were they migh find it someday
First off.I do not believe this is possible...reson being is the psycological argument of Nature vs. Nurture. Violent offenders on death row are dangerous people, and I do not believe that these extremely violent people are that way because they were somehow taught, or learned to be that violent.second off.there is the constitutional argument.recreating a person is basically killing them.if you believe the soul is the person then yes what you option does sound somewhat feasible..but I believe a person is what they have learned and experienced...if all your memories were erased you would simply become a puppet of our government...wheather that be better or worse for society.we simply could not authorize or accept this in any way shape or form.Mind erasing sounds like an interesting subject.it may be an option when we have many many more years of experience with it...but not likely that it will happen any time soon.
who's to say really? what if being a criminal is something that is embedded in genes...then what? They've got a new memory...but still have the same genetic disposition to commit haneous crimes? What if the network of individuals they're surrounded with slips up? What about society? they have to be notified that this individual is being placed there...even if the procedure was proven to work...they'd still be an outcast...and someone from society might remind them of their crimes...causing devistation. What if there are glitches, defects? There are too many what if's in this situation. Besides, lobotomies, which is exactly what this sounds like, were long ago considered cruel and unusual right? This sounds worse than gas, the chair, or leathal injection, being robbed of EVERYTHING that was yours...I don't even know if I believe in the death penalty...we're not living in the hamurabi (an eye for an eye) age anymore...That doesn't mean that people should'nt be punished...but...I really think "mind wiping" is dangerous...being implanted with false memories...it's kind of sickening...like playing God...I don't like it.
Aside from other problems with this "mind-wiping" idea, it doesn't take into consideration that some criminals may have an in-born tendency to be violent and lack empathy towards others. If you reduce them to a blank slate, you just may end up creating a new psychopath.
a bullet would be far cheaper
