Is there any merit in having a 'thick skin'?

people always used to say nasty stuff about my mother when i was in high school, and now they're making juvenile stabs at my ego by saying i'm a virgin in the workplace.

school and work are different, right? i can get people into major trouble at work for saying inappropriate things to me? i'm not really bothered by the comments but the person making them should be reprimanded regardless of whether i can take it or not.

Answers:
Don't buy into that "thick skin" crap. That's sexual harrassment, and you could sue for that if your employer doesn't do something to stop it. Teasing a male employee about being a virgin is no different than teasing a female employee by saying she likes to sleep around. In the past, women in the office were also told things like "get over it" or "that's just the way things work around here" when they had to put up with that kind of behavior, but not anymore. People are allowed to say things like that pretty much anywhere in society (free speech and all), but it's specifically prohibited in the workplace for a business owner to allow anybody (especially a supervisor) to make sexually-oriented comments that degrade other employees.

yes.

And to the person who suggests that this is unlawful sexual harassment, on the facts stated it's not clear that this is sexual harassment (even though the person asking the question is correct that the comments are inappropriate.)
