Why did walgreens ask for my license?

i picked up my dads medicine at a walgreens and when i paid for it they ask for my license and i was just wondering why they would do that

Answers:
probably to look at your name to see if you had the same last name
or maybe to see your birth year, so they knew you weren't some kid trying to get high?

They have to. It's the law.

To make sure you aren't stealing drugs.
To have documentation of WHO picked up the controlled substance.
When buying certain things, they want to make sure that the right person is buying. They need some form of ID and a license is the most common form that people carry.
It's the huge fad in retailing these days. They think they can make gobs of money sending you special coupons and selling your info data warehouses. I had the same thing buying a bicycle seat with cash the other day - the clerk demanded to know my home address and phone number. It wasn't this kid's decision to do this, and after I insisted and reminded him I was paying cash, he reluctantly agreed to do *something* to his system, allowing me to purchase. He just dumped the purchase into some other customer's record.

Collection agencies would pay lots of money for any tip on where people have moved to, and what their new phone number is. My guess is somehow crap like this makes it to guys who pay for huge lists.
They had to identify you. They can't just hand you a prescription not belonging to you, especially if the medication is a controlled substance.
To prove who you are. They ask for mind every time I pick up a prescription. A new law.
It's a little thing called the law.......
Because a perscription medicine is a CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE & since you are the one taking it out the door, then you are put into the system as the one who actually picked it up. It's Federal Law.
Because the medicine isn't in your name so they have to verify who they are giving it to, per the law.
Apparently one or more of the meds contained a controlled substance. They have to have ID shown by law.
if your talking about the medicine that you get the little ticket for and then take it to the pharmacy, then they ask for your lisence because its a certain item that you cant buy more than one of for certain regulations. if the register scans two it will say no. and so this way you cant steel them because they are in the pharmacy and they type in your lisence number so they know you only bought one.
