Is it legal to drink alcohol in public places in London? Are there any restrictions?

I don't know but when I lived in London, everyone would walk from pub to pub with their same pint glasses filled with beer and no police ever stopped anyone, and neither did the pub managers. Also, many people would buy a pint at the store, get on the tube and drink it on the tube. I don't know if everyone was just breaking the law or if they could legally do that with some restrictions. Those were just my observations though.
I just found out that you used to be able to and you still can in certain places. They changed the law September 1, 2001. I lived there right before then so I guess that's why everyone was drinking in public and the cops never cared. Check out this link:
You can drink alchol in public houses[pubs]but you are not allowed to drink alchol on the streets .you are allowed to drink in licensed restaurants . and in your hotel where you are staying .some pubs have drinking hours restrictions but it depends where you are. I hope this helpsyou
