Nazi Avatar - Should it be allowed on this site?

I have posed a few Q's on the military site and on two occasions have had answers from a member (level 2) who's avatar is the 3rd Reich’s symbol of a swastika being carried by a Spread eagle.

I personally find this offensive and have reported the matter as such, with the suggestion that this symbol be removed.

What do you guys think?

Part and parcel of why people died and are still dying today is the principle of Free Speech. With the right to say what you want is also the right to express yourself.

Technically i think the avatar is allowed in isolation as just a symbol..if it had the signature " death to all jews" or something equally repugnant then it has crossed the line.

When you do blanket banning of any possible offensive symbol it can lead far beyond good intentions....female avatars being banned for showing cleavage ?,im sure that offends someone...Gay avatars, theres at least 10 religions that preach against gays...etc etc

I find it in " bad taste " but not offensive, but it depends on the viewers perception.

I find the rather regular sight of seeing my national flag being burnt, very offensive.but then i realise that half the idiots doing it,couldnt point to Britain on a map.and the other half dont know what a map is.

I think there are many offensive avatars here, including Nazis. There are also Nazis here who have normal avatars. Unless there are pictures of sexual organs, I usually ignore it.
thing is the swastika symbol is also used by hindu's, look it up on google.

but yer if its the eagle and all that stuff.. perhaps you should
people should be able to put swastikas on whatever they want. if seeing a swastika can actually turn someone into a nazi, or incite some type of hatred, then we have bigger problems as a society than whether or not swastika avitars should be allowed.

as for you finding it offensive, i don't mean to be cold, but that's your own problem.

on a somewhat unrelated note- the swastika is a beautiful symbol with positive connotation used by many cultures that predate the nazis by thousands of years, and to let a bunch of nazi a-holes ruin the symbol is kind of a shame.
yahoo can make their own rules ebcause it is their site. If it was a US government run site, they could do this because it is freedom of speech.
unless the guy or girl is saying nasty stuff i would let them alone each to their own, a lot a people knock me for mine and my user name
i agree, shouldnt be allowed
while the symbol is repulsive to me --- I believe in freedom of expression so I don't believe that is enough reason to remove this avatar?
after all someone else might be offended by your avatar.
Personally, I think that if crooks and criminals run this country and are free to do what they want in the USA, then do you really think that a little avatar is really going to hurt you.
Right on! However, I am sceptical of the Holocaust...I will NEVER give sympathy again to the Jews as I know full well today what they stand for and what they are about.
Yeah, he's allowed to have that avatar. To ban the swastika as an avatar would be an infringement on the first ammendment to our constitution. The first ammendment is one of the philosophies that makes the USA great. I quote Voltaire: "I may disagree with what you say, but i will defend to the death your right to say it."
Just ignore it then. What is so terrible about being 'offended'? Nobody ever died from being offended as far as I know.
I think that everybody should be allowed to openly express his stupidity as he so chooses.
I do not like the nazi swastika, but I think that the person should be allowed to have it as their avatar.

Put it this way, what about the Hindu one? If the 'Nazi' uses that instead, would you still report him/her.

If they want to make it even easier for us to see how evil and intolerant his/her right wing policies are, so be it.
I think this is still a free country but we are losing our freedoms through people like you it is just a symbol it dose not mean anything unless you want it to
You have a right to be offended and the other member has a right to use his nazi avatar. You can't choose who has rights and who hasn't in a free society.
Well the swastika goes back so far..very often used in Celtic art etc. Old matey Adolf just stole it and twisted it forward to the right a bit. The 'Swastika' itself is beautiful and to be found in very many cultures, so no worries there. Just don't forget it was Hitler that kinda made (in)famous. He couldn't even invent his own symbol and neither can the Neo Nazis(either celtic or Viking). So enjoy the swastika for what it really is-peace.
A swastika not being carried by an eagle has it's origins in India.
I can see your point, and yes it is very upsetting to some people. The problem is where do you stop? There are probably people who find all kind of avatars offensive, do we also remove them? Do we also remove the Hammer and Sickle and those that portray anti-Christian, Satanist symbols, etc. I think in this day and age it would be most difficult to remove these kinds of symbols purely because people find them offensive.
If it offends you don't look at it. The guy has the right to express what he beleives in just as much as you do; it's a free country and what our grandparents fought for. Simply going around saying this should be banned and that should be banned simply because you find it offensive is offensive to me; does this mean you should be banned?
Don't get me wrong here I don't beleive in all that zich heil stuff either but you need to realise that we need to protect our freedom of speech, and that includes the right to use images in my mind ( so long as they can't corrupt ).
Surely freedom of speech and the right to express yourself is more important than upsetting someones sensibilities?
Who cares? That was all a long time ago.
