"Why does anybody need to own a machine gun?"?
Before the free-for-all, I realize it's legal to own certain types of machine guns in the US, the laws vary state by state, etc. I'm just interested in getting some other perspectives on this matter...

Financial investment? My machine gun has sextupled in value since it's purchase. Machine guns were recently acknowledged as the 2nd best investment on the market today, behind only real-estate in terms of rate of return. This is a direct result of the simple laws of supply and demand.
In May of 1986 certain laws went into effect that made it illegal for civilians to own fully automatic firearms that were manufactured after that date. There are approximately 240,000 machine guns registered with the BATF that can be legally owned by U.S. citizens.
About half are owned by civilians and the other half by police departments and other governmental agencies. This number became frozen in 1986. These automatic firearms became known as Transferable automatic firearms making them the more desirable and most expensive. Their price has increased to many times their original value since then and many have been placed on the BATF’s Curios and Relics list.
It was a great addition to MY collection.

No. Laws do not vary from state to state. This is a Federal issue. ATF. Class 3 license is needed for any fully automatic weapon much as it grieves me to say so.
It's probably a guy thing, but I know women that get just as big of a kick (literally) out of firing an automatic weapon. It's fun. You should try it.
Lori K brings up a good point too. Supply and demand drives up value, so yeah. It's an investment, although most people aren't in it for the money.

Then my machine gun toting buddy has misled me all these years, from what I understand from him, you have to basically sign away your right to privacy, but as with Woof, thanks for the info. I will look into it further. ;-)

To be cool. Other than that I don't see any reason. You can't hunt with one or you would obliterate the prey. That wouldn't be very good to eat when it's packed with bullets.
Most people don't need to, but they're a lot of fun for sport shooting (useless for hunting) and they can be a good financial investment.

It's not about need, it's about want. I have a right to get what I want as long as I am legal. I can buy/build a car that goes 300 mph if I choose to. As long as I keep under the speed limits while on public roads.
One person I know who showed me his machine gun fit the profile of someone always looking to become as good as others he looked up to but never quite making it - a lack of self-confidence from accomplishing something without help from others would have helped greatly - he always gets help from others (usually family, often in the form of trust funds) and is always starting one new business venture after another.

We have to be able to offer a threat to any all that would enslave us including our own government.
I have heard the reason other countries are reluctant to attack our country is because of this threat. The citizens are armed.
The citizens had to fight its own government when it became corrupt on more than one occasion.
Our independence for example.
You may own a machine gun in certain states but you must have a federal permit for each weapon. The permit, if I remember correctly, must be renewed each year. It is a very expensive permit, too.
Derek - check out the Curio and relics permit. You can get around some of the class III issues. Not to get all NRA on ya - The right to bear arms as written in the constitution is so that the citizens can arm themselves against there own government if needed. Plus full auto is just plain old fun.
It's not really a matter of need. It's all about your freedom to have it or anything else. No one person or group should have the authority to deny you of your rights. Just because you possess a machine gun does not make you a criminal.
Derek: FYI It's not a federal law. In the state where I live the local sheriff has the final say. Some counties have no problem issuing machine gun permits and they do. Yes, you do have to fill out some AFT forms but it's just a formality.

you can not own a machine gun in the u.s. in any state . unless you have a federal license too or are a licensed collector . try and get one of those licenses.that is if you are talking about a gun that can fire on fully automatic.
The framers of the constitution were worried about tyranny and the government turning on the people. For this reason the put the second amendment into the constitution.
If the people are armed than this is much harder to do.
Back then the people had basically the same guns as governments a black powder riffle or a black powder cannon.
Now the army would have a huge advantage if say Hillary decided to make this a communist country or George decided to make this a fascist state. So the people owning semi automatic or full automatic weapons would have the ability to hold off the government until the army dealers showed up.
Plus they are fun to shoot.
Have you ever taken a fully automatic rifle out and wasted about 200 to 400 rounds just to get rid of bottled up frustrations? I have and it works very well. I love to work off my inhibitions and I don't even have to have a full auto to do it. I can take any semi auto rifle and fire it full auto without changing any thing in it's nomenclature.
