Answers:
Law and Order's a great TV show, but it's not that connected to the reality of practice of law.
Under the U.S. Constitution, there is a presumption of innocence - the government is required to show by proof beyond a reasonable doubt that a suspect is guilty. Defense lawyers provide an important check in the nation's system of checks and balances. When they're doing their jobs they act to make sure that no one is jailed without a proper showing of evidence that they are guilty.
Some of the best attorneys serve as assistant district attorneys and Assistant U.S. Attorneys - in many places those jobs are quite competitive. The unfortunate fact is that they are not paid competitively - some ADAs get as little as $35,000 per year.
Studying law is difficult, but rewarding. The first lesson: don't take what you see on television programs at face value!
Good luck.
